The Data Point #13:Staying Focused on Your Own Data Journey
Avoiding the comparison game
Getting a job in data isn’t easy.
But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do it. The best things in life often don’t come easy.
Lately, I’ve been thinking about how easy it is to compare ourselves to others while searching for a job in data. This could be whether you’re seeking your first data role, or you’re trying to pivot into a new one.
I’ve been speaking to a lot of people recently who struggle with this. It’s not an easy thing to deal with. I’ve been there too.
One huge benefit of the data world is the aspect of online community.
There are few career paths out there with a community like ours.
It’s amazing. Something to cherish.
But with so many people out there celebrating their new roles, or telling people how “easy” it is to get into the field, we can become discouraged when we’re not seeing results.
So there’s one thing I want to tell you this week: Avoid the temptation to compare.
Theodore Roosevelt once said, “Comparison is the thief of joy.”
This has been true in my experience.
The more you compare yourself to others, the more bummed out you get.
But the truth is, everyone’s journey is different. We all have a different set of circumstances.
I posted about the same topic earlier this week on LinkedIn.
As mentioned in the post, it took me about 6 months to land my first job in data, start to finish.
But I’ve spoken with other established professionals who’ve done it in 3 months and others who took 1 year+.
It’s okay to be inspired by others, but stay focused on your own journey.
Focus on getting a little better each day
Only compare yourself to your past self
Celebrate small wins along the way
Short time or long, you’ll find the job you’re looking for if you stay consistent and determined.
This is a growing job field with tons of opportunities, and more opening up every day.
So don’t beat yourself up when you don’t land a job within a month, or even many months. Just focus on improvement.
Hope that provides a bit of encouragement for some of you this week.
That’s in for this week friends.
See you next time ✌️
